Landscaping Your New Home
While many people focus on constructing and furnishing their home, no other attribute plays such a gargantuan role as the landscaping. Landscaping is what adds curb appeal and draws attention to your house. The landscaping will either set your house apart from all the others or it will make it blend it will all the other homes on the block. It's important to remember that landscaping your house does not always have to be expensive and it can give such a huge amount of character you will wonder how you ever lived without it.
There are many different aspects to creating the perfect landscaping and it all depends on what your overall goal is. The perfect landscape should combined, color, texture and overall friendliness to those who use the house. The perfect way to start landscaping is sketching out what you would like the house to look like. Don't worry if you're not an artist, it doesn't take one. The goal of this procedure is to simply fit everything in and get a general feel for how the yard will look. It helps to use very basic shapes for the plants and bushes you plan to be installing and then coloring over them to get an overall feel of the finished product.
A couple things to take into consideration when planning a great landscape is the conditions that the plants will have to live in. Odds are that the local nursery won't sell a plant that won't live in your climate unless it's specifically grown to live in a greenhouse or inside. Taking a walk around nurseries is a great way to get ideas about which plants you may want to use and what options are available to you. On top of that most employees are very knowledgeable and can offer great advice about all things plants and even some landscaping techniques.
While picking out plants it's important to get a good mix of annual and year round species. While annual plants tend to be more beautiful and colorful if you purchase solely annuals when winter roles around your landscape will look lifeless. Large Leafy shrubs are a great way to create privacy and are a cost effective way of filling up a large space quickly for those who are landscaping on a budget. The color of your house will play a role when picking out flowering plants. You should always choose colors that go well with your house and do not clash. White and earth tone houses should mix well with most all flowers but if you have a different color try choosing any contrasting colors such as blue and orange. Getting a good color combination will set your landscape apart from everyone else's.
Don't be afraid to plant trees. When you're landscaping many of the plants and shrubs you will be planting won't be fully grown. Landscaping is an investment in your house. While it is possible to buy fully mature plants, it's much more of a gamble since transplanting them is much more of a shock and they are much more expensive than the younger specimens. A tree will provide great shade and adds something unique to your landscape that many others don't have. Just because you plant a tree does not mean it has to grow to be 20 feet tall or drop leaves all over your yard. While you may have to do a little racking here and there, many tree species grow to a manageable size and will add depth to your landscape.
In the end landscaping is an art but if you follow a few simple rules and start a conversation with someone knowledgeable on the subject it is hard to go wrong and soon your house will be looking fantastic and having people turn and stare as they walk by.
